Calling Gaza a genocide because the Free Palestine movement says so does not make it one. The label is a political claim, not a settled finding.

Genocide, under the 1948 Genocide Convention, requires a specific intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group in whole or in part. The Holocaust meets that test. Nazi Germany had a written policy to kill the Jews, built death camps for that purpose, and murdered about 90% of Polish Jews and about two-thirds of Europe’s Jews.

Gaza does not match that record. About 3% of Gazans have been reported killed in a war that began with the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023. Israel’s stated aim is to destroy Hamas, an armed group, after that attack. High civilian deaths in urban fighting, even at a grim scale, are not the same as a plan to wipe out the population. Courts have not issued a final ruling that Israel has genocidal intent. Activist groups, some governments, and some UN officials use the word anyway; that is advocacy, not a verdict.

So the mob’s use of “genocide” equates a war with about 3% of a population killed to the murder of about 90% of Polish Jews. The numbers and the intent do not support that.
