This is set by ASIO and published on the official Australian National Security website. It means there is a **greater than 50% chance** of an onshore terrorist attack or attack planning occurring in Australia within the next 12 months.
### Context (as of late July 2026)
- The level has remained at **PROBABLE**.
- In his June 2026 Annual Threat Assessment, ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess stated that “Probable does not tell the full story.” He noted the security environment is degrading, with rising risks of politically motivated violence, and that the current five-level system (Not expected → Possible → Probable → Expected → Certain) was not designed for today’s more complex mix of threats (lone actors, blended ideologies, online radicalisation, socio-political grievances, etc.). Raising it to “Expected” would require intelligence of a specific attack, which ASIO said it did not have at the time.
- The government has indicated a review of the threat advisory system is underway, but the official level itself has not been changed.
