THE RUSSIAN COLD WAR 1975 PROPAGANDA AND "ZIONISM" TERM FABRICATED BY RUSSIA & ARAB NATIONS UN resolution 3379 later revoked but the STIGMA CONTINUES

THE RUSSIAN COLD WAR 1975 PROPAGANDA AND "ZIONISM" TERM FABRICATED BY RUSSIA & ARAB NATIONS UN resolution 3379 later revoked but the STIGMA CONTINUES. UN General Assembly Resolution 3379, adopted on November 10, 1975, by a vote of 72–35 with 32 abstentions, famously declared that "Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination". Championed by the Soviet bloc and Arab nations, it equated Zionism with colonialist racism. The resolution was officially revoked in 1991.

Key Aspects of Resolution 3379:

  • Context: Passed during the Cold War and a heightened era of anti-Israel sentiment in the UN, largely driven by the Arab League and the Non-Aligned Movement.

  • Content: It determined that Zionism—the national liberation movement of the Jewish people—constituted racial discrimination.

  • Reaction: Israel's ambassador to the UN,

, famously tore up the resolution before the General Assembly, declaring it based on "hatred, falsehood, and arrogance".

  • Revocation: The resolution was revoked on December 16, 1991, by General Assembly Resolution 46/86, in the lead-up to the Madrid Peace Conference. The repeal was a major diplomatic shift following the end of the Cold War and the first Gulf War.

  • Legacy: Although repealed, the 1975 resolution remains a significant, controversial point in UN history, often cited regarding the delegitimization of Israel.

On this day in 1975, Chaim Herzog delivered one of the most iconic speeches in UN history in response to the outrageous "Zionism is Racism" allegation. Herzog stood before the UN and tore up the resolution in question. Incredible that today, we face the same bigotry and corruption in the UN. "I stand here not as a supplicant. Vote as your moral conscience dictates to you. For the issue is neither Israel nor Zionism. The issue is the continued existence of this organization, which has been dragged to its lowest point of discredit by a coalition of despots and racists. The vote of each delegation will record in history its country's stand on antisemitic racism and anti-Judaism. You yourselves bear the responsibility for your stand before history, for as such will you be viewed in history. We, the Jewish people, will not forget."
