**October 2022 — Jerusalem capital decision**
After the Albanese government reversed Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Hamas described the move as “a step in the right direction.” Palestinian Islamic Jihad also called it “a courageous step and a victory for the Palestinian cause.”
**December 2023 — UN ceasefire vote**
A Hamas-linked video thanked Western countries, including Australia, for supporting a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Albanese rejected the praise, saying he had “contempt” for Hamas and would not give the group publicity.
**August 2025 — Palestinian state recognition**
